‘Connecting People to Nature’, is the theme for World Environment Day 2017

World Environment Day (WED) is observed on June 5 every year to promote awareness on the importance of preserving our biodiversity, the need to identify problems related to the environment and ways to take corrective action. It was on this day in the year 1972 that the United Nations Conference on the Human Environment was formed. First celebrated in 1973, World Environment Day, also popularly known as Environment Day, is a means to tackle environmental challenges that include climate change, global warming, disasters and conflicts, harmful substances, environmental governance, ecosystem management and resource efficiency.

World Environment Day has received tremendous support from the public, non-profit organizations and governments around the world. Various awareness campaigns - beach clean-ups, concerts, exhibits, film festivals, community events and much more - are organized to spread the message, which is to improve the quality of life of all living beings on this planet without harming nature. All the activities of World Environment Day are carried out to spread eco-awareness and increase green footprint.

Each year, World Environment Day is hosted in a different city with a different theme for one week that kicks off on June 5. A World Environment Day theme is selected along with an Environment Day slogan, which aims to emphasize the importance of protecting our planet and promote an understanding that they each individually can play a significant and effective role in tackling environmental issues.

WORLD ENVIRONMENT DAY HISTORY

World Environment Day (also called as WED) has been started celebrating as an annual event on every 5th of June since 1973 in order to raise the global awareness about the importance of the healthy and green environment in the human lives, to solve the environmental issues by implementing some positive environmental actions as well as to make aware common public worldwide that everyone is responsible for saving his environment and not only somebody, government or organizations working for it.   

World environment day was first established to be celebrated every year by running some effective campaigns by the United Nations General Assembly and United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) in the conference on Human Environment began from 5th to 16th of June at United Nations in 1972. It was first time celebrated in 1973 with the particular theme “Only one Earth”. Since 1974, the celebration campaign of the world environment day is hosted in different cities of the world.

It is a big annual celebration started by the United Nations General Assembly to engage millions of people from different countries across the globe as well as draw attention of political and health organizations to implement some effective actions.

WHY WORLD ENVIRONMENT DAY IS CELEBRATED

World environment day annual celebration campaign was started to address the huge environmental issues like wastage and losses of food, deforestation, increasing global warming and so many. Every year celebration is planned according to the particular theme and slogan of the year to bring effectiveness in the campaign all through the world.

It is celebrated to successfully get carbon neutrality, focusing on the forest management, reducing greenhouse effects, promoting bio-fuels production by planting on degraded lands, use of hydro-power to enhance electricity production, encourage common public to use solar water heaters, energy production through solar sources, developing new drainage systems, promoting coral reefs and mangroves restoration in order to get prevented from flooding and erosion including other ways of environmental preservation. Some of the objectives of the world environment day campaign are mentioned below:

• It is celebrated to make aware the common public about the environmental issues.
• Encourage common people from different society and communities to actively participate in the celebration as well as become an active agent in developing environmental safety measures.
• Let them know that community people are very essential to inhibit negative changes towards the environmental issues.
• Encourage people to make their nearby surroundings safe and clean to enjoy safer, cleaner and more prosperous future.
• 

WORLD ENVIRONMENT DAY ACTIVITIES

Variety of activities are planned to celebrate this great event in different countries to encourage more people towards the celebration. Various news channels take part very actively in the celebration to cover the news and distribute messages about the celebration among common public through their news publications to bring effective and positive changes towards the environment to solve all the environmental issues. Some of the national and international level activities include street rallies, tree plantation, garbage recycling, surrounding areas clean-up, parades and so many activities in order to draw people attention towards wide range of environmental issues as well as bring difference.

People of all age groups actively involve during the celebration to save their planet in original form as gifted by the nature. Especially modern day youths hugely take part in the celebration through many activities such as clean up campaigns, art exhibitions, motivating people for tree-planting, dance activities, recycling garbage, film festivals, community events, essays writing, poster competitions, social media campaigns and lot more. Many awareness campaigns are also run at schools, colleges and other educational institutions to motivate students towards their environmental safety. The celebration takes place at national and international level by organizing various activities in the public places to aware common public about the real causes of environment status degradation as well as let them know what steps should be taken to solve such environmental issues.

Each year celebration of the World Environment Day is based on the particular theme decided by the United Nations to make the celebration more effective by encouraging mass people worldwide to hugely take part in addressing environmental issues on global scale. Punctuality - A life time requirement ..

Punctuality means doing a thing at the previously designated or appointed time. It is often said that ‘art is long and time is fleeting’. Punctuality enables us to do a great deal of work within a short span of time.

Punctuality is the most important characteristic of all successful people. A punctual person is able to complete all his task on time. The student, the teacher, the politician, the official, the trader and even the layman all have to observe punctuality in order to win glory and success in life.

Punctuality brings in its trail efficiency. It helps us to build our career. A punctual person commands the confidence and respect of others. If we look at the lives of all great men, we would realize that they had got a time schedule for every day. Mahatma Gandhi used to rise early in the morning. He used to keep up appointments and was punctual to a minute.

A punctual student never misses any class and learns everything that his teacher teaches. He reached the school in time and completes his assignments within the stipulated time. Hence, he manages to do well in examinations. Hence, punctuality should be practiced from childhood.

Similarly, punctuality is very important at workplaces. A punctual person reaches his office in time. Punctuality of an employee gives positive signal to the employer. A punctual employee gives the impression that he is very serious for his job and that he is competent of discharging his duties in an efficient manner. He commands respect in the eyes of both his colleagues and the boss.

Punctuality is a virtue, which is doubly blessed. It imparts efficiency and keeps a person fit and healthy. If we get up early in the morning and take a walk every day and follow a set-programme of life every day, we shall be able to keep fit and healthy. But if we waver and show laxity in our daily programs, we are bound to meet with failure in life.

Punctuality implies maintaining regularity in our daily schedule of work. Punctuality is the gate-way to success.

Punctuality in our school

1. Attending the school  on the given date after holiday/s is mandatory for all the students.

2.Late coming leads to minus score and will be recorded in the student card. 

3. Minus scores and Plus scores influence the student's selections in various aspects.

4. All the students are expected to report the class in time. If delayed, they should meet the vice principal and get permit card to enter the class.

5.Completing the tasks in time is the correct way of learning. Postponement of works is a bad habit  and a hurdle to the progress. 

6.Attending yoga session is on the time is compulsory. Every 3 late comings leads to one extra  yoga class.

7.Taking food in time is very much important.Never skip food if you want to be healthy and happy.

8. Fee payments:

Advance fee payment : before - April every year

Term - I fee :  On the school re-opening day.

Term - II fee before December end. 

9.Reporting Activity zones is equally important for your skill development and also for your enjoyment.

10. School assembly is one more Knowledge center , you should never delay to reach. You must walk fast and stand in the place given for the proceedings of assembly.

11. We cannot entertain unnecessary permissions (in view of student's progress) during working days. All the tours , trips are to be planned only during holidays.(Refer holiday calendar from previous posts of this blog. )

SRI KRISHNA KUCHELA - A STORY OF TRUE FRIENDSHIP (Holiday story 2)

2. KRISHNA - KUCHELA 

– a story of true friendship 

Guruvayur Temple, a renowned Sri Krishna Temple in Kerala, celebrates Kuchela Dinam  in honor of Kuchela or Sudama, a friend and ardent devotee of Lord Krishna. Our epics defined true friendship long before friendship day came into existence. Read on to know how Lord Sri Krishna taught us the value of friendship years ago.

 

Legend

As per the Bhagavata Purana, Lord Sri Krishna studied at the ashram of Guru Sandipan along with Kuchela, a poor brahmin boy.

The two became close friends and shared mutual respect. They parted ways after finishing their studies at the ashram.

 While Sri Krishna ruled the Kingdom of Dwaraka, Kuchela remained as a poor brahmin.

Kuchela married a woman by name susheela and started a family. However, he could not afford to even feed his family. One day, susheela reminded him about his friendship with Lord Krishna and asked him to seek the Lord’s help.

Kuchela was reluctant in the beginning, but he made up his mind to visit Sri Krishna unable to bear the sight of his impoverished family.

Having very little provisions in the kitchen, Susheela gave Kuchela a small bag of beaten rice and asked him to gift it to Sri Krishna. Kuchela started off for dwaraka with a hope that his family’s condition would improve after meeting Lord Krishna.

When he reached the palace, the royal gatekeepers did not allow him inside as he was dressed in rags. One guard took pity on Kuchela and told Sri Krishna about his arrival.

On hearing the news, Sri Krishna rushed to the gate and welcomed Kuchela with utmost respect.

He then washed Kuchela’s feet with water and seated him comfortably in the palace. Kuchela was hesitant to offer the bag of beaten rice to the Lord as he considered it to be a small gift.

Sri Krishna sensed that Kuchela had brought the bag and asked him about it. Kuchela reluctantly gave the beaten rice to the Lord who savored every grain. Kuchela was too embarrassed to ask Sri Krishna anything and left the palace empty handed.

   However, the great Lord knew what his friend was going through and with his powers transformed Kuchela’s hut into a palace filled with riches. A stunned Kuchela thanked Sri Krishna and remained his ardent devotee.

Values of the story :

1.    Friendships should always be selfless.

2.    Habit of Dependency in friendship is not good.

3.    A real friend helps his/her friend without asking.

4.    We should value the relation at every stage of life.

5.    Real richness lies in respecting the individuals but not their wealth.

Eklavaya

                 Since ages, the story of Eklavya( a character from the Indian epic- Mahabharata) has come to define exemplary discipleship. But there is an unheard and unseen side to the famous story.

                 Eklavya was the son of a poor hunter. He wanted to learn archery to save the deer in the forest that were being hunted by the leopards.  So he went to Dronacharya (a master of advanced military arts) and requested him to teach him archery. Dronacharya was the teacher of the Royal family.

                In those days, as a rule, a teacher to the members of Royal family was not allowed to teach the state art to anybody else. It was forbidden to make anyone as powerful as the princes for the safety of the region.

           But Eklavya deeply desired to study under Dronacharya.  Dronacharya, bound by the state law, could not accept him as his student. Eklavya in his heart had already accepted Dronacharya as his Guru. He went home and made a statue of his Guru. 

Over the following years, with sincerity and practice, he learnt archery and became better than the state princes at the art.

    He became so good at it that, he would hear the sound of the animal, shoot an arrow at it and claim the animal.

             One day, Arjuna, the prince found out about this talented archer. Making matters worse, he saw that Eklavya was far better than him. He went to Eklavya and asked him, ‘Who taught you archery?’  

    ‘Dronacharya,’ said Eklavya.   Hearing this, Arjuna was furious. He went up to Dronacharya and said angrily, ‘What is this? You have cheated us. What you have done is a crime. You were supposed to teach me exclusively, but you taught this man and made him more skillful than me.’

Dronacharya was baffled and confused at Arjuna’s allegations. He wondered who this student of his was, who had learned the art from him but whose name and identity he did not know! He thought hard but could not come up with an answer for Arjuna. He could not believe, this student was better than even Arjuna.

Both, Dronacharya and Arjuna decided to meet the boy.

Eklavya welcomed his master with great honor and love. He led both of them to the statue he had made of Dronacharya. Eklavya had practiced archery over all the years, considering and believing the statue to be his Guru.

In ancient times, a common practice in learning was- Guru Dakshina, where a student would give a token of gift or fee for the knowledge gained by the student.

Dronacharya said, ‘Eklavya, you must give me some Guru Dakshina. You must give me the thumb of your right hand.’ Eklavya knew that without the thEklavya without a second thought gave the thumb of his right hand to his Guru.

In this story Dronacharya is commonly viewed as being cruel and self-centered. The perceived understanding is, this boy who has learned the skill on his own and is good at it, is made to give it up for the vested interest of Dronacharya.  But when one looks at it from the point of view of the wise, one finds, if it were not for this incident, nobody would have ever known Eklavya.

Though on the outside, it seemed as if Dronacharya had done injustice to Eklavya, actually Dronacharya uplifted Eklavya from just being a student to becoming an epitome of discipleship. 

Dronacharya blessed Eklavya with immortality by asking him for his thumb. So when people think of devotion, they think of Eklavya, and not Arjuna.

“See the greatness of Dronacharya, he took the blame on him and uplifted his student. That is why, even if the Guru is wrong, if your devotion is there you can never go wrong. But the Guru is not wrong, it appears he was partial but he uplifted Eklavya and preserved his Dharma (duty) also. His duty was to maintain the law of the land: You cannot have anyone much better than the prince.”
